Foreign Service Officer

• US diplomats advance the interests of America abroad while promoting peace, supporting prosperity and protecting American citizens worldwide. A history graduate’s knowledge of world history or studies of a country or region’s culture will come in handy. The State Department says they are looking to hire people with leadership abilities who can hold their composure during times of great stress like a military coup. The five career tracks applicants can choose from include consular officers, economic officers, management officers, political officers and public diplomacy officers. Once applicants are hired, the career track they choose is the one they follow throughout their career. Museum Curator

• The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes curators as those who arrange, catalog and exhibit collections of objects that have cultural, biological or historical significance such as paintings, textiles and sculptures. Many curators specialize in particular fields including history. The BLS says that curators should have computer skills and the ability to work with electronic databases as well as knowledge of scanning technology, digital imaging and copyright law since they are required to post information on the Internet. Curators with the federal government may work at the Smithsonian Institution, US Department of Defense (DOD) military museums and museums and historic sites managed by the US Department of the Interior. Archivist

• The BLS describes archivists as professionals who acquire and preserve records and documents of importance and value for permanent storage or display. Archivists specialize in certain areas of history to help them know which records and documents should be retained and made part of an archive collection. The BLS says archivists need analytical ability and research and computer skills including being able to work with electronic records and databases. Archivists with the federal government may work at the National Archives and Records Administration or military archives of the DOD. Management Analyst

• The BLS defines management analysts as those who analyze and propose ways to improve an organization's structure, efficiency or profits. Management analysts with the federal government specialize by type of agency. They work to help the government increase efficiency and worker productivity while controlling costs. Some qualities management analysts should have, include self-motivation, discipline, analytical, strong oral and written communication skills, time management, creativity, and the ability to get along with a wide variety of people, according to BLS. The average salary for management analysts with the federal government is $79,830.
