How to Replace Tub Surround Caulk
- 1). Remove old caulk from around the tub. Use your razor knife to cut away the old caulk. Mix your bleach and water. Use your toothbrush, bleach water, and a rag to clean the area.
- 2). Cut the tube on a tube of caulk with your razor knife. Cut it at a 45 degree angle following the line marked 1/4 inch. Puncture the diaphragm inside of the tube with the prong on your caulk gun. Insert the back of the tube into the caulk gun and drop the front into the slot on the front of the gun. Push the pressure release bar on the back of the gun to hold the tube in place.
- 3). Place the tip of the tube into a corner of the tub. Squeeze the trigger and slowly pull the gun backwards across the joint being covered. Pull the gun away from the tub. Release the pressure on the tube by pulling the pressure release bar on the gun and pressing it forward again. Run your finger gently across the bead of caulk to smooth it. Wipe your finger with a wet rag.
- 4). Place the tip of the tube on the last 1/2 inch of your previous bead of caulk and squeeze the trigger. Continue placing and smoothing caulk around every joint of the tub surround. Be sure to get the edges against the walls and floor as well as the joint where the tub and shower surrounds meet.
- 5). Let the caulk dry for 10 to 12 hours before using your tub.
