The largest city in Bhutan is, undoubtedly, Thimphu, which is also the capital. Because of its importance, it is also the main destination for tourists in the entire country.

While the history of this city goes back in time, its importance was not considered until Thimphu was declared the country's capital in 1961. Until then, you never saw a single vehicle on the streets of the city and urban development truly began back in those days. Even now, you can see that Thimphu has gone through an ample development process.

The cultural life is booming as well. The center of the city is the place where everything seems to be happening. You can stop there and watch some interesting live performances in the outside theater. The city also has a stadium and a riverside park, which make Thimphu even more appealing for tourists and locals alike. If you want to feel the beat of the modern city, you should visit Norzin Lam where you can see the best hotels, malls and other important buildings bundled in the same area.

Thimphu has two main seasons: hot wet summers and dry cold winters. Because the temperatures can get quite high in the summer, you may want to visit Bhutan during the short fall or short spring season, which is September-October and March-May respectively.

Among the attractions that you can see in Thimphu, the monasteries are quite well known. They are called gompa or lhakhang and are quite numerous.

A very old temple in the valley where the city is situated is Changangkha Lhakhang, which was erected during the 15th century. This is a Buddhist temple and is visited by tourists for the stunning views of the Thimphu Valley it offers.

Evening prayers are carried on by locals at the National Memorial Chorten. If you want to witness an authentic manifestation of the life people carry here, you should visit here during that time of the day.

Zangthoperi Lhakhang is another important temple in Thimphu. Here you can admire some really stunning murals and the treasuries kept here are really worth visiting. The temple was erected on a place where heavy battles were fought, and the locals think the temple has the ability to pacify the area.
