Shopping Thrills of Goa Tourism

One usually does not associate shopping with Goa tourism as beaches, jungles, and myriad other beautiful forms of nature come to the mind when one thinks of Goa. All this is true but it is also true that shopping makes for a great add on to your trip. The joy of returning home with lovely little knick knacks and other souvenirs makes for a hearty experience indeed. In fact, retail therapy in its own right is definitely a chunky element of one's trip to Goa. So, come explore some of the most happening shopping hangouts in Goa.

Anjuna Flea Market

The Anjuna Flea Market is perhaps the most well-known precincts of shopping in Goa. This market is held on Wednesdays and is like a veritable explosion of colourful fun and frolic. Whether it's a second hand motorcycle, cheap local jewellery, or some intricately done up piece of craftwork, the Anjuna Flea Market has it all. This place has a strong Hippie connection. In fact, in the 1960s, the Hippies who settled here, used the place for trading their goods through barter. This has evolved into the Anjuna Market of today. Handmade lamps are amongst the hottest collectibles to be found here. Besides, the Anjuna Beach here is also amongst the most happening party venues here.

Mapusa Market

This is also one of the hot favourites amongst shopaholics visiting Goa and has become one of the defining aspects of the Goa Tourism shopping scene over the years. The word ‘Mapusa' has been derived from the two Konkani words, ‘map' and ‘sa'. Map stands for measure and Sa translates as fill up. The market is organised every day, except Sunday. However, it is most vibrant on Friday mornings. Vendors and shoppers from Goa and even from other states of the country converge here. The beauty is that the stuff one picks here often costs almost a fraction of what one has to pay at boutique shops of resorts. The trade here spans antiques, textiles, and various interesting souvenirs.

Glastonbury Street

A must visit place for every bargain hunter. This is a winding street, which runs all the way to the beach and got its name from the Britons. The street is simply filled with little stalls overflowing with irresistible collectibles by way of beaded patterns, embroideries, embellishments, designs, and mirrorworks. The market is also a great place for buying cheap but beautiful bedspreads, bindis, bidis, and bongs. Overall, Glastonbury Street makes for a fine outing combined with some interesting shopping.

Star Magic Shop

The name says it all! If you visit this place, you will find that Goa tourism even gifts you some magic. Sounds crazy? Not quite. At the Star Magic Shop, they sell different props and magic gear. Besides, you also get to learn a few interesting magic tricks. The Star Magic Shop stalls can be located across the markets of Anjuna, Baga, and Calangute. Quite a few visitors have a merry time at home by showing off the tricks they pick up here.
