7 Keys To Keeping Your Resolutions
It's time again for New Year's resolutions.
If you want to increase your chance of making lasting changes, follow these 7 steps.
1.
Get your mind right.
You will never succeed at any resolution if you're trying to force yourself to do something you're resisting.
Focus on the positive.
Want to stop smoking, start exercising regularly or eating better? If you've decided it's going to be really hard, it will be.
Instead, think about how much better you'll feel and proud you'll be when you do it.
2.
Get professional help.
You're more apt to stick to a resolution if you start seeing results.
To get results faster, get help from a nutritionist, personal trainer, life coach, etc.
With their help you can create a plan that will help you reach your goals.
3.
Find you true motivation.
Your reason for the goal has to be something more compelling than "I want to be healthier.
" Do you want to live to walk your daughter down the aisle? Are you depressed and lonely because your weight has caused you to isolate yourself? Do you miss doing activities you used to love? Are you tired of feeling out of control? 4.
Quantify it.
Don't say "I'm going to exercise more" or "I'm going to eat better" or "I will start meditating.
" Resolve to work out x number of times per week for x amount of time.
Make it a goal to eat 5 servings of veggies per day.
Set an earlier wakeup time to meditate, read, exercise or whatever and stick to it.
5.
Expect the expected.
Make plans and back up plans.
Things will come up; don't let them derail you.
6.
Be realistic.
Thinking big is great but if you find yourself making the same resolution year after year, ask yourself why and then dial back your goals.
If it was to exercise regularly, did you try to do too much too soon? Did you force yourself to start running even though you've always hated it? Did you try to design a routine on your own and end up overwhelmed by information overload? Start smaller and build on your successes.
7.
Make yourself accountable.
Get a trainer or coach or find someone who is also committed to getting healthy and hold each other to your resolutions.
Goals without accountability are easy to abandon.
