How to Glue Douglas Fir Boat Stringers
- 1). Measure the width of the boat and record the measurement so the proper size stringer can be installed. Cut the stringer to size with a circular saw, if necessary. Line up the blade of the circular saw with the mark on the stringer and cut straight along the line.
- 2). Clean out the area where the old stringer was located. Wipe it down with a clean, damp rag and scrub off any old debris or glue left over from the previous stringer. Wipe it dry with a clean rag.
- 3). Set the stringer into place and verify that it fits properly in the opening. Remove the stringer and apply epoxy over the end of the boat where the stringer will be attached. Squirt out enough epoxy to cover the whole area that the stringer will be up against. Repeat the process for the other side of the boat.
- 4). Set the stringer into place by hand and push up firmly so it can adhere to the epoxy underneath. Repeat the process for the other side. Wipe away any excess epoxy that has leaked out, using a clean rag, before it dries and adheres to the boat.
- 5). Test out the stringer after it has dried for one hour and verify it is securely on the boat. Repeat the process for all of the other stringers you need to glue to the boat.
