Have you ever wondered why you can't just copy your Xbox 360 games, burn them and give them away or sell them to your friends? You probably have and if you asked your computer geek buddies about it, they probably told you that it was because the discs had "Xbox 360 firmware" embedded in them. At that point, you probably said, "Okay, now I get it" instead of "What's that?" because you didn't want to sound stupid.

Don't feel bad. You're not alone. The term "firmware" gets tossed around a lot and since most of us aren't all that interested in learning why you can't just copy games but only in how, we let the fact that firmware is the reason why you can't just burn a copy of your favorite Xbox 360 game whenever you feel like it.

We'll get to the how to copy Xbox 360 games in a moment, but why not expand your knowledge base a little and find out what firmware is and how it works first? Firmware is a term that was coined way back in 1967. Its meaning has been modified over the years, but basically, it is "microcode" or a small bit of code embedded in a computer program. Originally, firmware was installed in a computer's CPU (Central Processing Unit) as a way for programmers to be able to modify instructions for the computer's operating system.

The reason why firmware is not called software is because it isn't quite as soft as software, but it's not as hard as hardware, either. It's firm, or semi-fixed. That's a pretty vague way of putting it, but if you've ever played around with it before, you'll understand. Anyway, Xbox 360 firmware is embedded in every copy of every game they make. The firmware makes the games virtually hack proof, because it can't be modified without knowing the "signature." Any attempt to mess with the 360 XEX files (executable files) will result in your not being able to boot the file. In other words, you won't be able to play the game.

The firmware is what makes it impossible to copy Xbox 360 games. However, there is a way to do it if you have the right software. You're going to need to look for a software program that allows you to copy your games using a Stealth Patch so that you can play them online without having them be detected as pirate copies. Some of the sites that sell this type of software are easier to use than others, but there will always be a step-by-step procedure you will have to go through, so be ready for a bit of a learning curve.

It's not a complete no-brainer, but the best sites have made their instructions easy enough for just about anybody under the age of 60 to follow. If you're over 60 and aren't one of those old-timers who's still afraid of the internet, you can do it, too. It's not a no-brainer, but if there are still some brain cells firing, you can do it.

These Xbox 360 Firmware "fixes" cost less than the price of a single game, so once you've got it, you're in Xbox360 games heaven. Check out a few and find one that gives you everything you need in language you can understand. Backup your discs and then get back to gaming and stop worrying.
