Basque Elections - The Morning After
The Basque Country in Northern Spain is a place where social life changes.
Slowly.
What happens in this Basque Country influences Spain and visa versa.
Recently there have been elections and it seems that after years of a nationalist government there is a tendency towards change where people are open to other alternatives.
Is this due to the YES WE CAN virus that flew over from the States? Possibly.
One of the challenges in this country is freedom.
Citizens live in fear for years as critics of the infamous ETA may cope these critics with their live.
Slowly the country gets more transparent.
People seem to overcome fear.
In this context one can understand the recent outcome of the elections in this area.
The nationalist party PNV has indeed won the elections, but relatively it is no longer able to rule with a majority.
The non-nationalist parties like the socialist part and the popular party have gained at cost of the Nationalists.
Two things can happen now: 1.
A coalition can be formed between the non-nationalist parties; this would be unique as socialists and popular would cooperate against a shared "Enemy.
" The risk is that this coalition falls apart during their government which would favor the Nationalists even more in the next election.
PNV would go into opposition.
2.
PNV will rule with either of these parties.
This is an option and would be preferable for it is a smaller change.
Whatever will happen, this region in Spain is changing and will change more.
