Arrest in 2009 liquor store killing
A second arrest has been made in the fatal shooting of Rufina Hernandez, a well-regarded D.C. liquor store owner whose killing two years ago prompted condemnation from top city officials.
D.C. police said Dowen Donovan Knight, 57, was arraigned in Superior Court on Monday on a charge of first-degree murder while armed.
Hernandez was killed Nov. 7, 2009, in a holdup of her store in the 5400 block of Georgia Avenue NW, police said. Investigators have said that two men entered the store, La Casa De Morata, about 9 p.m. and demanded that Hernandez hand over money from the cash register. The money that was taken, an investigator said at the time, was not a large sum.
A witness had told police that after Hernandez complied with the demand, one of the men shot her. She was found with gunshot wounds in the face and neck and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Then-Mayor Adrian M. Fenty voiced dismay in noting that Hernandez apparently had followed the guidance often offered to potential robbery victims, and complied with robbers' orders. She was, he said, "doing what she was supposed to do," in not resisting.
Why she was killed, he said at a news conference at the store, was "probably something that can never be explained."
Council member Muriel Bowser (D-Ward4) said Hernandez was a hard worker who was highly regarded for keeping her block clean. D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier had said investigators heard only good things about Hernandez as they searched for clues.
A suspect in the case was arrested on a warrant two years ago. Online court records indicated that there has been no disposition in his case.
Police said in a statement that the man arraigned Monday was indicted in August in connection with the shooting of Hernandez. They said he was being held at the time in Montgomery County in an unrelated matter.
After being released by the county, D.C. police said, Knight was turned over to U.S. Marshals and brought to the District.
