Is There A Right Way To Do A Monogram?

A monogram is an initial or a group of initials that are usually combined in a decorative design used as a sign of identity.
Traditional monograms have been popular for centuries.
One can typically find monograms on linens, bags, suitcases, Nelle and Lizzy jewelry, etc.
There is much discretion in the proper formatting of a monogram.
The earliest, and most common female monogram used today is the first name initial on the left, the middle name initial on the left, and the last name initial in the center.
The last name initial is typically in a larger font than the first and middle initial.
Males typically have a different format for their personal monograms.
It is usually found as first name initial, middle name initial, followed by the last name initial.
Unlike women, men generally keep the letters equal in size.
In today's society, it is common to see a "joint monogram" for married couples.
For a woman taking the man's last name, the modern monogram would read the bride's first initial on the left, the groom's first initial on the right, and the groom's last name initial in the center.
The traditional monogram would consist of the bride's first name initial on the left, the groom's last name initial in the center, and the bride's maiden name in the center.
However, some couples decide they would like to keep the maiden name or hyphenate the two last names.
If the bride is keeping her maiden name, the rules for the monogram are not quite as clear.
They may chose to have the monogram with the bride's first initial on the left, the groom's first initial on the right, and the last name initials for both the male and the female in the center.
For a more modern sleek look, we find that people like to just do the initial of either the first or last name, and then have the piece embroidered with the entire name.
Adding a unique font to the monogram is another way to add more personality to it.
Just the last name initial with two dots or brackets surrounding it looks good as well.
When it comes to monograms just remember to have fun.
These rules aren't set in stone, they are just helpful hints and guidelines about what is generally deemed as the right way to monogram.
It is all about you and what YOU would like on your item.
