How to Measure Propane Regulator Pressure

    • 1). Attach the manometer or dial-gauge pressure measuring device at the outlet test tap on second-stage regulators, integral two-stage regulators and two-psi regulators with an outlet test tap. Attach the manometer or dial-gauge pressure measuring device in the piping test tap in two-psi regulators that do not have an outlet test tap. This will be downstream from the line regulator. Alternatively, you may use the test tap located upstream of the appliance shut-off valve for a two-psi regulator.

    • 2). Light, or re-light, the pilot lights. Turn on all appliances to maximum capacity.

    • 3). Read the flow pressure on the manometer or dial-gauge pressure measuring device. Add the distance from zero in both columns of a manometer. The second-stage or line regulator should read at 11-inches water column (w.c.) with a minimum of half the appliances in operation. The propane delivery pressure must be at, or above, the appliance input pressure as stated on the rating plate of the appliance manufacturer. If it is not, there are problems with the gas supply that can't be corrected by adjusting the pressure regulator. Check for leaks. Verify the correct size of the regulator and piping. Check the adjustment of the output pressure of service regulators upstream.

    • 4). Turn appliance controls to the off position. Turn all appliance valves to the shut position. The container valve will stay open to keep pressure on the system.

    • 5). Read the lock-up pressure on the manometer or dial-gauge pressure measuring device. You should see a slight pressure increase and then the rise will stop. This measurement should be no more than 30 percent higher than the flow pressure reading from Step 3.

    • 6). Continue to observe the lock-up pressure reading for a minute. If it continues to rise (fails to lock up), replacement of the regulator is necessary.
