How to Make a Reconstructed Sweater Coat

    • 1). Cut the hem off the sweater that fits the person who will be wearing the sweater coat. If the sweater isn't a cardigan, cut a slit up the front in the middle.

    • 2). Cut the torso off the other sweaters, cutting a straight line from armpit to armpit across the chest. Discard the arms and tops as scrap material. Cut the hem from the bottom of the torso and cut the torso up each side. You will have two rectangles. Cut any seams that may be left on the sweater. Cut these rectangles into strips that are 3 to 4 inches wide.

    • 3). Sew the strips of sweater together lengthwise using a zigzag stitch. The edge will be curly and rough-looking, but this is okay. This will be the seam that faces out. Continue to sew the strips of sweater together, lengthwise, with the rough seam on the "pretty" side. You want a piece of fabric that's wide enough to sew to the bottom of the original sweater.

    • 4). Sew the piece of fabric to the unfinished bottom of your original sweater. You'll want the "wrong" side facing the "wrong" side of the fabric. Use the same zigzag stitch. When you're done with that, sew over all the unfinished edges with a zigzag stitch.
