Fear of Flying and Alcohol - What"s the Connection?

There are some of us that are a little bit nervous whenever it comes time to flying.
I don't know many people that do not at least get a pit in their stomach to a certain extent, or perhaps some butterflies whenever they are sitting on the plane and it is taxiing down to the runway.
This is a perfectly natural response, but there are some individuals that have such a morbid fear of flying that they end up avoiding it at all costs.
They may be so nervous while they are in the air that they would be willing to do anything in order to overcome that fear.
One thing that most people who are of legal age try to do in order to overcome the fear of flying is to have a stiff drink before boarding the plane.
They may also continue to drink while they are on the plane, usually ending up having too much by the time it is all over.
Although this may make them feel relaxed in some cases, there are some reasons why you might want to avoid alcohol, even if it tends to make you feel a little bit better.
Here is why.
Alcohol impairs your judgment and a little bit of alcohol can certainly go a long way in helping you to feel better whenever you are on the plane.
The problem is, most people tend to feel a little bit better after having a single drink and they think that they would feel even better after drinking more.
This can cause a chain reaction that can actually impair your judgment to the point where you feel worse after drinking rather than feeling better.
Although it might be a good idea for you to have a single drink in order to calm your nerves, do not try to calm them further or you may end up going in the opposite direction.
A much better way for you to overcome the fear of flying is to mentally prepare yourself ahead of time for the flight.
Outside of going for therapy, however, there are very few things that are going to be able to help you to overcome your fear permanently.
Just keep in mind that it is perfectly natural for you to worry a little bit whenever you're on a plane and then do what you can to be able to feel good enough to make the flight.
