Tips to Reduce Water Retention

Water retention can make you feel bloated and uncomfortable. Retaining water is a common symptom of premenstrual syndrome, and usually disappears within a few days. Treatments for water retention are available, and range from dietary changes to medication. If you find that you are retaining water frequently, seek medical attention, as this can be a sign of a serious condition. - The best way to reduce water retention is to stay hydrated. Prevention magazine notes that water dilutes sodium in the body, consequently reducing the amount of water retained. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily.
- A healthy diet can also help reduce water retention, according to the Mayo Clinic. Eat a balanced diet including whole grains, lean protein and dairy. And don't skimp on fruits and vegetables; not only are they a healthy source of nutrients for your body, but many of them contain large amounts of water that contribute to your daily water intake. Limit your intake of sodium by avoiding the salt shaker and processed foods like deli meats, canned soups and soy sauce. In addition, avoid alcohol, as it can cause dehydration, making water retention worse.
- Calcium may also relieve water retention, according to the Mayo Clinic. If taking supplements, try 1,200 mg. You can also increase your calcium intake by drinkning milk and eating yogurt and cheese. Or try 200 to 400 mg of magnesium to help relieve your symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you suffer from heart or kidney conditions, do not take a magnesium supplement.
There are several diuretics on the market that can reduce water retention. Many medications designed to treat premenstrual syndrome include a diuretic. Talk to your doctor before taking a new medication. - The Mayo Clinic notes that physical activity can also help ease water retention. Try to include physical activity into your schedule every day.
