How to Hinge Mount Art
- 1). Arrange all materials on a clean tabletop with plenty of room to lay everything flat.
- 2). Place the mat board over the backing board then flip the mat board up so that it is lying face down with its top edge to the top edge of the backing board. Use a strip of linen tape to join the two together, creating a hinge. The tape should span the entire width of the mat board.
- 3). Close the mat board back over the backing board. Position the artwork in the mat board window the way you want it to display.
- 4). Open mat board again and mark top corners of artwork lightly on the backing board with the pencil.
- 5). Flip the artwork upward so it is face down with its upper edge slightly above the pencil marks.
- 6). Soak two adhesive strips in water and allow them to become sticky. Using the tweezers, apply one strip perpendicular to the top edge of the artwork about one-third of the way from one side. One-fourth of the strip should overhang and adhere to the backing board; the rest should adhere to the back of the artwork. Apply the second strip in the same fashion about one-third of the way from the other side of the artwork. Be careful that the strips are not so wet as to drip on the artwork or other materials.
- 7). Soak two more adhesive strips until sticky. Apply one perpendicularly to each of the vertical strips you already applied. Position this cross strip across the lower end of the previous strip that is sticking to the backing board. The strip you add should lie flush with the edge of the artwork but should not touch it. Each hinge forms an inverted T shape.
- 8). Flip the artwork, using your new hinges, back over so it is face up on the backing board. Close the hinged mat board over the artwork to make sure the position is correct. The hinges on the artwork should not be seen in the mat window. If it needs to be repositioned, you can do so within the short time before the adhesive paper dries.
- 9). Reopen the mat board and flip the artwork back over so that the still-wet hinges are flat. Allow them to dry, then flip the artwork back over, close the hinged mat board, and you are finished. The entire artwork and mat board configuration is now ready to be framed.
