Donating Stock to the Church
- 1). Find a copy of your most recent brokerage statement and determine which stocks you wish to donate to the church. The brokerage statement should detail the number of shares you own, along with the amount of your unrealized capital gain.
- 2). Contact the church you want to donate the appreciated stock. Some churches will already have a broker in place who can help you make the transfer. Otherwise, you will need to contact your broker and get the forms you need to make the transfer.
- 3). Call the brokerage firm if the church does not have the facilities to help you with the donation. Inform the brokerage representative that you plan to donate your stock to the church. The representative can get you the forms you need to complete the transfer.
- 4). Complete the stock transfer form when you receive it. Be sure to enter your name exactly as it appears on your brokerage statement. Provide complete details regarding the recipient of the stock, including the full name of the church and the mailing address.
- 5). Make copies of all your paperwork, including your most recent brokerage statement and the transfer form, and keep them in a safe place. Submit the transfer form and a copy of your brokerage statement to the address listed on the form.
- 6). Follow up with your church in a week or two to make sure the transfer was completed. Contact your broker if there are any problems with the transaction.
