How to Be Bohemian
Instructions
1Understand the bohemian past. Historically, bohemians were associated with gypsies who were thought to come from Bohemia. Eventually people started using the word to describe marginalized artists and musicians in Europe who were known for their untraditional stances on politics, religion and society. Today, the meaning of the word has morphed to include individuals with a particular look and lifestyle.
2
Dress differently. The bohemian style is comfortable and laid back. Women wear long, flowing skirts and loose tops. Vintage jewelry completes the look. Both women and men should dress in layers. Choose clothing with bright colors and distinct patterns. Scarves are common and hairstyles are usually long and somewhat unkempt.
3
Be willing to challenge conventional beliefs. Bohemians have traditionally embraced uncommon world-views. Be skeptical and question authority.
4
Find a way to become involved in the arts. The bohemian lifestyle is strongly associated with artistic pursuits. Write poetry or short stories, paint pictures or learn to play a musical instrument.
5
Become a wanderer. Tying back to the historical image of nomadic gypsies, bohemians are thought of as wanderers with no permanent homes. Travel as much as possible and take some long vacations with no particular destination--just set out and see where you find yourself.
