Ajmer is an important religious center for both Hindus and Muslims and is located in Northwest India, in the State of Rajasthan. The city is quite at the center of Indias largest State (in terms of Area)

Ajmer, historically known as AjayMeru was once the capital city of the famous King Prithviraj Chauhan. Founded in the Seventh Century AD by King AjayPal Chauhan, it has seen the Rajputs of Mewar and Marwar, the Marathas and the Mughals fight for it. The Marathas against money finally ceded it to the British Imperial Forces. It was then integrated into an Independent India as Ajmer State in 1947. Finally, it was merged into the State of Rajasthan in 1956.

The Ajmer City is a beautiful valley, surrounded on all sides by the Aravali Range of Mountains. The valley is replete with lakes and some beautiful locales. Ajmer and its vicinity have great religious importance in not only India but also the entire South Asia. Pilgrims from all over India, Pakistan and Bangladesh come here.

For Hindus, Pushkar (a religious center, eleven kilometers to the north-east of Ajmer) is unique. It is the location of the only temple of Lord Brahma (of the holy trinity of Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Sustainer, and Shiva the Destroyer; that represent the One God Brahman). The Pushkar Lake in Pushkar is considered a holy lake among Hindus. There is an annual camel fair and the Pushkar mela sees tourists from all over the world. The place is at its festive best on the five days preceding the Full Moon Night (Poornima) of the Kartik Month in the Hindu Lunar Calendar and culminating on the Poornima itself. During this time, Hindus believe that a dip in the Holy Lake and worshipping at the Brahma Temple is instrumental in getting them Moksha / Nirvana (Salvation). If one visits Pushkar at this time of the year, one will witness fervor like never before.
For Muslims, Ajmer houses Dargah Sharif, the tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti a pilgrimage place that attracts people of all religions who come with faith to realize their wishes. The famous Dargah receives thousands every year from Pakistan and Bangladesh. The place is famous for pilgrims and believers coming and tying strings to the walls of the Dargah with their wishes in mind.

As a city, Ajmer today has a population of over five hundred thousand. It is South of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan and is also considered the crossroads of Rajasthan. It is here from where routes to Jodhpur (Marwar), Bikaner, Udaipur (Mewar), Kota (Hadot), and Jaipur (Shekhawat) fork out. The man made Anna Sagar is a beautiful lake and worth visiting.

Ajmer is also a hub for education. It is the home of Mayo College, one of Indias premier Boarding Schools for Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary (Pre-College) education. Originally founded for Royal Princes of the Princely States of India, Mayo College today is open for all willing students pending their admission via admission norms and examinations.
