How to Access Health Insurance in Florida for Kids
- 1). Ensure your children qualify for Florida KidCare health coverage. Unless you are applying for Medicaid, the guidelines are as follows: children must be younger than 19, have no health insurance, be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen, be ineligible to receive Medicaid, not be the dependent of a Florida state employee that is eligible to receive health care coverage, and not be in a public institution.
- 2). Gather the following documents needed to fill out a Florida KidCare application: most recent Form 1040, W-2, or pay stubs for the past four weeks; cost of adding your children to your employer's provided health care plan, if applicable; your children's social security numbers or the date you applied for them to receive social security numbers.
- 3). Figure out which Florida KidCare program you need to apply for: MediKids is for children ages 1 through 4; Healthy Kids for children age 5 through 18; Children's Medical Services Network for children up to 18 with special health needs; Medicaid for families that cannot afford to pay a monthly premium, or who already have other health insurance for their children.
- 4). Visit the official Florida KidCare website at http://floridakidcare.org/ and completely fill out an online application. Alternatively, you can download, print out, and mail an application. If you need assistance while filling out the forms, call 888-540-5437.
- 5). Wait four to six weeks to have your application processed. To check on its status, call 888-540-5437. If approved, you will be mailed information about enrolling in your KidCare plan and paying your premium.
