No holiday to New Zealand is complete without a trip to Christchurch. Called the Garden of New Zealand, as it is so abundant with green space, flower gardens and rural parks, anyone how loves to see nature at its best will not be disappointed.

A unique view of Christchurch can be seen from one of the many heritage trams that operate on a 2.5km loop round the centre of the city. Tour guides will give you an informative commentary, and you can hop on and off the tram whenever it suits you.

Plant lovers must make a stop at the Botanic Gardens. Welcoming visitors from 10am until 4pm daily, the Gardens boast the largest and most varied plant collection in all of New Zealand. You will find it a fascinating study of the plant life of the island, as well as of species from the far flung corners of the earth.

Located in the heart of the cultural precinct of Christchurch is the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu. Housing native and international collections, it is a city treasure and can be found on Montreal Street.

If contemporary art is what interests you, you will find one of the biggest collections in New Zealand at the Christchurch Centre of Contemporary Art. The CoCA, as it is known, not only hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions, but also provides numerous specialised art services.

Children will love the imaginatively displayed collections that can be found at Canterbury Museum. And the hands-on Discovery Centre housed within it provides the perfect way for children to learn about the world and its creatures.

Canterbury Museum is open every day except Christmas Day, from 9am through until 5,30pm. If you visit between April and September these hours are from 9am to 5pm instead.

For the shopaholics amongst you, a trip to the Cathedral Square Market is a must. It runs from 10am until 4pm each week from Wednesday to Saturday. You can snack on some delicious local grub at one of the many street food vendors, and browse through the stall selling unique New Zealand crafts and clothing.
