How to Clear Out Clogged Toilet Air Vents
- 1). Locate the toilet air vent. In most homes, this will be set up on the top of the roof. The vents are generally about 3 to 4 inches in diameter and stick up through the roof about a foot or so. The vent will be located on the roof directly underneath the toilet. Use a ladder to access the roof and take a flashlight with you.
- 2). Remove the screen from the vent if there is one. Use a screwdriver, if necessary, to loosen the clamp that holds the screen in place.
- 3). Shine a flashlight down into the vent to see if you can locate any immediate obstructions, such as leaves or birds' nests. If possible, remove these by hand.
- 4). Connect a bladder to the end of a garden hose by screwing it into place. Hose bladders expand when water pressure is applied, locking them in place inside the pipe. The bladder then directs a powerful jet of water toward the clog.
- 5). Insert the garden hose and bladder into the vent as far as possible or until it meets the clog.
- 6). Have an assistant turn on the water to the garden hose. Blast the inside of the vent for 30 seconds or so or until the clog clears.
