Early Season Skiing And Snowboarding In New England - Skinning Up Skiing down
When I found Enzine in the last day or so I thought I died and went to writers heaven.
I've Looking for a place to pass on knowledge of Skiing and Snowboarding in the Northeast USA.
There is so much to talk about this time of year.
When the first three issues of Ski Magazine show up in the mail box in one week we know skiing and Snowboarding is within reach.
Arapahoe Basin is open and it's not even Halloween yet, but Sunday River Maine and Sugarloaf Maine Are making snow.
The night time temperatures have been around 26 degree's.
The crown of Maine has already had 2 small snow events in October and is expecting another storm tonight October 29 2007.
The Expected accumulations around one to two inch's.
Keep a look out for hard core skiers hiking there favorite mountains around New England.
The Most popular places for hiking skiers are (1) Killington Vermont.
The area you will find skiers and snowboarder is known as the Glades or the Canyons to locals.
The area is what Killington Resort calls the North Ridge with The North Ridge Triple Chair.
One of the oldest lifts and areas at Killington.
Some Hikers will travel up the Long Trail which is Vermont's part of the Appalachian Trail.
It can be accessed about a quarter mile west of the Killington Access Road on Rt.
4.
Other Hikers will Head up a (2) Pico ski trail.
Pico Mountain was once a independent old school New England Ski Area until Killington absorbed it years ago.
The old days of Pico Mountain is for another article.
Another place to look for early season hiking Skiers is Mad River Glenn in Vermont.
Mad River Glen Ski IF You Can credo is certainly true.
Mad River doesn't believe in grooming and as far as I know they still don't allow Snowboarding.
You will find Telemark skiers at Mad River.
as all the other Resorts I mention.
With the advent of high Tech Telemarking gear coming on the market over the last 10 years the Old School style of skiing has made a come back.
This has enabled skiers willing to learn the technique access to early season snow simply by adding a set of climbing skins and "skinning" up the trails and skiing down.
Snowboarders can enjoy the extra perks of telemark as well by purchasing a "split" Snowboard.
Its a two piece board cut down the middle with a interlock system to put the snowboard together once at the summit you snap the board together and Snowboard down.
Jay Peak in Vermont is also known for spotting early season skiers.
In New Hampshire the first place to see early season skiers and Snowboarders is Wildcat Mountain in the White Mountain National Forest.
You hike or skin right up the mountain at Wild or head up the Wild Cat Trail which is just south of the Appalachian Mountain Club Parking area.
Being part of the National Forest hikers need not be afraid of being thrown off the mountain which could happen at a private resort.
All skiers and Snowboarder thinking of hiking up there favorite hill should always consider if they are on private land or public use land.
