How to Soak Firewood in Used Oil
- 1). Lay firewood logs on the ground in the form of a square. Place a piece of painter's plastic over the frame to serve as a makeshift container.
- 2). Remove the bark and split the firewood into quarters. Splitting firewood into quarters requires splitting the firewood once and then splitting each half again.
- 3). Pour used motor oil into the makeshift container. Place each piece of firewood with one edge laying flat in the motor oil. Let the firewood soak for 10 minutes. Remove the new waterproof firewood and stack it for later use.
- 1). Remove the outer lay of bark from your hardwood firewood. Bark acts as a natural protection against fire and makes firewood harder to burn.
- 2). Split the firewood into four equal pieces and then split it into smaller diameter kindling with a hatchet. Kindling thickness should range from the size of a permanent marker down to the diameter of a pencil.
- 3). Pour used motor oil into a round container until it is 1-inch deep. Old coffee cans work well as a container for the oil and kindling. Stand the kindling pieces upright in the container. The used motor oil will soak into the kindling and make a waterproof fire starter.
- 4). Remove the kindling from the container and store it wrapped in plastic. Wrapping kindling bundles in plastic prevents the oil from leeching on to surfaces that may stain. Refill the container several times to create a sizable amount of kindling for fires.
