Etiquette for Groomsmen & Bridesmaids
- During the ceremony, groomsmen should arrive 30 to 45 minutes prior to the ceremony to usher guests to their seats. They should escort female guests down the aisle with male companions following behind. If multiple guests arrive simultaneously, the oldest female should be seated first. The bridal party will almost always be asked to sit in the front rows, and in some cases stand with the bride and groom during the ceremony.
- In most weddings, the bridal party will wear matching formal attire, which both groomsman and bridesmaids are responsible for renting or purchasing. The tuxedo or dress is usually picked out by the bride and groom, which may not be fashionably agreeable with the entire bridal party. A well-mannered bridal party member will accept and wear whatever attire is selected, without making a fuss.
- For bridesmaids, it is customary for the maid of honor to take the lead on planning a bridal shower and a bachelorette party including the other bridesmaids and special guests. The best man is responsible for coordinating the bachelor party. All bridal party members should attend all pre-wedding events including the wedding rehearsal dinner, and the engagement party.
- The best man and maid of honor have additional moral and financial responsibilities leading up to their loved one's big day. Both should give a speech and lead a toast at the wedding reception. The best man must be a witness on the couple's marriage certificate, as well as hold onto the rings prior to the ceremony.
