    Scope

    • Shop safety training can involve several areas, including accident investigation, general laboratory safety, chain saw safety, compressed gas handling protocols and confined space awareness. Some schools, such as Virginia Tech, offer specialty training in areas such as aerial/man lift operator certification, biosafety compliance, contractor safety and electrical awareness. Certain programs, such as that offered by Rutgers University, satisfy the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.211-.219 regarding machinery and machine guarding.

    Duration

    • Length of study varies with each course, but some, such as the contractor safety class offered by Virginia Tech, last just one hour.

    Cost

    • Training in a classroom setting varies with the school's cost of tuition. On-the-job shop safety training is usually offered at no cost as a condition of employment.
