Three Tips for Younger Looking Skin

Long term sun exposure is the top cause of wrinkles as we age and can even speed the aging process. Naturally, protecting your skin with a broad spectrum sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection is the best way to help prevent premature wrinkles, sunspots, and discoloration. But how do you reverse and slow sun damage that has already begun? Retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), and azelaic acid are three tips that might serve you well. Skin care products with these ingredients can help you have younger looking skin.

Retinoids

Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and can help reverse photoaging from sun damage. They help smooth and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, and help firm and plump skin. They can even help lighten dark spots and discoloration. Retinoids were originally used for controlling acne and were later found effective in helping to slow collagen loss in the skin. Retinoids cause dying skin cells on the surface to slough off more quickly, revealing newer, healthier skin cells. This process also slows the breakdown of collagen and helps keep the skin more elastic and firm. Retinoids may be found in prescription skin care products as well as some over the counter products. You may want to start with an over the counter product first and then move into a prescription product. Medical grade skin care products may offer you quicker, more dramatic results. Talk with your doctor about how to start a retinoid program that is right for you.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)

Alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs are natural based acids and are generally used to exfoliate the skin. They can help soften and smooth skin and reduce discoloration. Medical grade chemical peels that use alpha hydroxy acid penetrate the follicles and help clear cellular debris. This is effective in treating fine lines, wrinkles, skin discoloration, superficial acne, and acne scars or other minor scars.

Azelaic acid

Azelaic acid is also a natural based acid. It was originally developed to treat mild to moderate acne. It works by helping to keep pores clear and free from bacteria and debris that cause acne. It has also been used to help lighten skin discoloration. Azelaic acid is available by prescription from your doctor.

Visit your doctor or local med spa center under the care of a medical doctor and skin care specialist to inquire about the skin care treatments that are right for you. It is never too early to start a skin care regimen to keep your skin looking young, vibrant, and healthy.
