    Merit-Based Scholarships

    • Students who are married are eligible for the Samuel E. Laycock Memorial Scholarship. It awards $150 to married law school students who maintain 4.0 grade point averages. The Russ and Carol Blaser Memorial Scholarship is another merit-based award for married students; those who pursue pharmaceutical degrees and achieve 3.4 grade point averages qualify for $1,500 scholarships.

    Income-Based Scholarships

    • Some foundations recognize that married couples who want to pursue college degrees incur financial burdens, and provide them income-based scholarships. For wives in the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio areas, the Kathy Kardish Wilson Memorial Educational Fund provides up to $1,000 to students who serve their communities and demonstrate financial need. The Earl Bernard Wilson Scholarship distributes awards in varying amounts to physics majors who can demonstrate need; students are required to have 2.5 grade point averages.

    Christian Colleges

    • Married couples who attend Valley Forge Christian College can apply for the Family Tuition Scholarship. Full-time married couples, including students returning to college, may be eligible for $500 for the academic year. In addition, Cornerstone University awards the Bertha Dewey Stock Memorial Scholarships in varying amounts to married juniors and seniors who pursue degrees in the ministry.

    Military Spouses

    • The Stateside Spouse Education Assistance Program awards up to $2,400, a need-based award, to spouses of people who are retired from the military, or currently enlisted. Widows or widowers are also eligible. Eligible students may receive awards for four years to cover tuition or other college expenses. ThanksUSA will award $3,000 a year, or the costs of a college program, to spouses of military service personnel; students with 2.0 grade point averages qualify for 2011.

    Professionals

    • Married students pursuing degrees in law or medicine can apply for the John R. Heflin Memorial and Drs. Barbara and Stephen Kimbrough Scholarships, respectively. The Chase College of Law and East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine award these scholarships to their students. The law school awards scholarships to full-time students and the medical school gives preference to students pursuing medical degrees in ophthalmology or neurology; award amounts vary at each school.
