LDS Primary Activity Ideas

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides opportunities for young children to learn fundamental principles of the Gospel through good living. One way this is accomplished is through outside activities away from the normal Sunday school class routine. These activities are planned to help instill principles of service, community involvement and spirituality in the lives of the young children. - If you live within driving distance of one of the 120 LDS temples throughout the world, take the children for a visit. Many temples have visiting centers that display artwork that depict gospel principles and Biblical stories. These visiting centers also show short videos that teach a particular Gospel topic. These videos are typically kept short so that young children do not get restless.
After spending time in the visiting center, take the children to the temple's front lobby and have one of the temple patrons come and talk to the children about the importance of temples in their lives. You will need to call ahead of time to make plans but all temples will accommodate you when appropriate time is given. - Give primary children the opportunity to serve at a nursing home. If you do not live near a nursing home, try to visit a retirement home. Nursing homes provide a different environment than most children are used to experiencing, so prepare them for all of the sights, sounds and smells they will encounter while visiting.
The visit should have a purpose. Primary children can sing a few primary songs for the people in the home. The performance will provide an uplifting experience for everyone involved. The people in the nursing home will enjoy the company and the children will love the opportunity they had to serve. - Primary children are old enough to begin to appreciate a clean neighborhood. They are also young enough that they need to be taught about how a neighborhood is cleaned. Kids love going to the park for fun and excitement. Plan an activity around cleaning up the local park or the school playground. Show the older children how to pick up trash and where the trash should go. Have the younger children help you and the older children find trash. Then have snacks and playtime on the playground equipment after the work is finished. Be sure to invite family members to the activity to help out with the kids.
