How to Install Guy Wire Tree Support

    • 1). Measure 3 feet out from the tree trunk with the yardstick to place the eye anchors into the ground. Make the anchors an equal distance apart around the tree. Drive the anchors into the ground at a 45-degree angle away from the tree until the eyes sit just above the soil line.

    • 2). Cut a length of cable material for each anchor. Make these lengths equal to approximately half the total distance required for the guy wires.

    • 3). Attach one end of each length of cable material to the eyes of the anchors. Tie the cable material in secure knots. Attach the other end of the lengths to the turnbuckles by knotting them tightly.

    • 4). Cut three more lengths of cable material for the distance between the turnbuckles and the tree trunk. Make these lengths twice the distance between the turnbuckles and the tree plus about 8 inches for tying.

    • 5). Insert the ends of the lengths of cable through the hose sections and pass the hose sections to about the midway point on the cables.

    • 6). Loop the cable lengths through the bottom crotches of the tree and position the cables so the hose sections rest against the bark of the tree.

    • 7). Stretch each cable length out toward the anchors in the ground to attach them to the turnbuckles with tight double knots.

    • 8). Adjust the turnbuckles by turning the eyes to loosen them completely. Tie the cable lengths to the eyes of the turnbuckles, making the lengths taut enough to support the tree. Do not make the cables so tight that you strain the tree or prevent it from moving slightly.

    • 9). Tie colorful streamers onto the guy wires to make them visible.

Check the guy wires once or twice each month for tightness. Make sure the hose sections cover the wires attached to the tree trunk. Make sure the wires provide the correct amount of support. Tighten the wires slightly by moving the turnbuckles, if necessary.

Remove the guy wires after one year to avoid damaging the tree.
