Removing Blackheads - How to Remove Blackheads

Are you looking to get rid of unsightly blackheads, whiteheads, or acne from your face? While you can easily remove them yourself, you must be careful on how you do it, to avoid further skin irritation and infections. So before you do so, here are some things you want to know.

Everyone has oil glands (the sebaceous glands) that secrete oil to the pores. In some people, the glands are overactive, causing the impurities on your skin. Before you reach up to pick at the blackheads, though, realize that squeezing them can put you at risk for further outbreaks and potential scars!

You can use a blackhead extractor to get rid of them, but they do not always work. Since they are somewhat like squeezing by hand, you can potentially get the area infected by irritating the site. What was once a blackhead can then become acne or a continuous cycle of blackheads, whiteheads, and acne combined.

The best thing you can do for your skin and pores is to keep your face clean on a continuous basis. This means a strict regimen of washing in the morning and evening with gentle soap or formulated cleanser that can safely wash away the oil without adding chemicals or further oil to the skin. Follow this with a mild exfoliator a couple times a week to slough off dead skin cells.

If you do see blackheads form on your skin despite your daily cleaning, here is what you can do:

* Steam your face. Allow the pores to open up by exposing the skin to the steam in a warm shower, apply a warm washcloth to the face for 15 minutes, or steam the face over a pot of boiling water infused with essential oils (with a towel draped over the head to keep the steam from escaping).

* Use a tissue or cotton ball to swipe at the affected areas in an upward direction, removing the impurities. If that does not remove the blackheads, it is best to leave them alone and just continue to keep your face as clean as possible. Eventually they will come off on their own.

Overall, it is important to practice good hygiene for your skin and avoid touching it with your fingers to keep from transferring and imbedding oil in your pores. Removing impurities like blackheads can be tricky if you have never treated them before, if you have had problems with them for some time. As easy as it is to quickly poke at them, you owe it to yourself to consult with a dermatologist or aesthetician on a regular basis to determine what products could be most helpful to your skin to discourage impurities from forming.
