Activities for the Girl Scout Promise and Law
- Write the Girl Scout Promise on index cards, using two to three words per card. Shuffle these cards well, and deal them to each girl in the troop. Have each girl look at her card and determine where it fits in the law. The girl with the first words of the Promise will place her card on the table or the floor, and then the girl with the next words will place her card on the table or floor. The game will continue until each girl has placed her card, in the correct order, to complete the Promise. Repeat the activity for the Girl Scout Law. This activity works well when girls are just beginning to memorize the Promise and Law.
- Ask each Girl Scout to reflect on the words of the Girl Scout Law and try and imagine what Juliette Gordon Low had in mind when she wrote those words so many years ago. Allow girls to work in groups of two or three to decide on a famous woman in history who possesses all of the values described in the Girl Scout Law. Give each group time to research and create a presentation for their chosen famous woman, such as a poster or a short play, and then present it to the rest of the troop. Make sure the girls explain why they believe this famous woman displays all of the values mentioned in the Girl Scout Law.
- During your weekly troop meeting, ask each girl to reflect on the events of the past week. Provide a personal diary for each girl. Spiral bound notebooks make easy and inexpensive diaries. Ask each girl to write or draw a picture of one of the values of the Girl Scout Law that they observed over the past week. Or, ask them to reflect on how they personally lived by the Girl Scout Law that week.
- This fun card game is appropriate for older Girl Scouts, such as Juniors or Cadettes. The game is based on the popular card game, Snap. Write two to three words of the Girl Scout Promise on playing card sized index cards. Make several sets of these cards. Shuffle and deal the cards to the girls. The scouts will take turns putting one card in a group in the middle of the table. If two of the same card are played one after another, the first girl to put her hand on the group and say "Girl Scout!" wins the pile. The game is played until a player is able to collect all of the cards from the other players. This game can also be played using the Promise in the same manner.
