Dogs bark for many reasons, but if you have a dog that barks for no apparent reason, it could be a problem for your neighbors and even yourself.
A barking dog constantly can be very annoying.
The earlier that you can train your dog not to bark unless it's necessary the better the relationship you will have with your dog and maybe even your neighbors.
If you have a dog that barks incessantly you can do some things to reduce the barking.
First you want to know why your dog is barking.
You want to make sure that your dogs needs are all met that there isn't any danger that they are barking for, or they are trying to alert you to danger.
You want to make sure that they are safe.
If everything appears OK then you can correct the situation of their barking.
Dogs sometimes will bark just because they're bored.
Puppies learn early on that if they bark they will get attention, or they are experiencing separation anxiety.
Many dogs will grow out of it, but some dogs just like the attention and will continue to bark even after they are no longer puppies.
Some dogs just enjoy barking.
To train your dog not to bark at inappropriate times you will want to give them positive attention when they are not barking and negative attention when they are.
If you are around when the dog is barking you can simply tell him "hush" and when he quits barking give him a treat.
It may take a few times to train him the new command "hush" but he will soon learn it and know that at that time he is supposes to stop barking.
There are also collars that you can buy that will give them a small harmless electric shock that will shock them every time that they bark.
Usually a collar like that doesn't take long for the dog to learn not to bark.
If your dog barks because he's bored, pay special attention to them while you are home.
Take them on long walks to let them explore new places and make them tired so that they sleep better at night.
Praise them on their walks so that they know what is acceptable behavior for them to practice and continue doing daily.
Patience and love will make your dog a better behaved animal and soon will become a special member of your family that everyone can enjoy and love.
You can't change bad behavior overnight it will take time, but it will be worth it.
