Getting Around Gauteng With the Gautrain

For those living in Johannesburg and its surrounding areas, the Gautrain is a wonderful and convenient way to travel.
The Gautrain is a train of luxury that speeds commuters along its 80 km route, taking them to many interesting and varied destinations such as Sandton, Constitutional Hill, and more.
For those who do not wish to brave the incredible traffic volume and congestion that plagues those traveling to and from Oliver Thambo International Airport, this train is the answer.
Constructed to coincide with the Soccer World Cup in 2010, which the country was proud to host, the guatrain has eliminated an estimated twenty percent of the vehicles that would normally be contributing to the congestion along the N1 highway.
But the luxury Gautrain is not only for those traveling to and from OR Thambo.
Commuters are able to use this lightning fast train to reach Sandton, Malboro, Pretoria, and more.
The train speeds along at a breathtaking 160km an hour, linking Johannesburg with Pretoria and reaching ten stations en-route.
The ride is both highly comfortable and smooth, ensuring that passengers enjoy a wonderful experience that is considered by some to be well worth the cost of a ticket.
Commuters have the benefit of air conditioning and plenty of space for storing packages and other items.
With all the perks taken into consideration, it is understandable that this would be considered a very affordable way to travel in luxury, however, not everyone agrees.
For those commuters who will be using the train regularly, a convenient card system has been set up and implemented.
The Gautrain does not operate alone.
There is also a Gautrain bus service that covers six routes thus far.
Organizers promise more routes for the public will be added in the future.
The train was plagued with controversy from its inception.
Critics commented upon the fact that, for the average South African, the cost of using the train is too high.
For instance, a journey from Johannesburg to Pretoria will set you back R100-00.
The critics are also concerned about the Gautrain being allowed to degenerate into a neglected condition in the same way that other modes of public transport have been allowed to do.
Those commuters who make use of the Metrorail trains are expected to use the Gautrain as a way of avoiding the overcrowded, badly maintained, and unreliable system that Metrorail is renowned for.
Nevertheless, the Gautrain is proving its critics wrong in one way - it is hugely popular.
For any visitor to the exciting and famous city of Johannesburg, a ride on the Gautrain is a must.
It is even said that no visitor should miss out on the experience.
