The Unhealthy Side of Granola

103 78
It used to be that the word "granola" meant healthy.
But once again, we're being misled.
Today the used to be good for you health mix is quite often nowhere near healthy.
In fact if you buy it packaged from a typical grocery store, it's loaded with fat, sugar and unnatural additives and preservatives.
Many of today's granola doesn't just contain good things like whole grain oats.
Manufacturers have added unhealthy ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, artificial sweeteners and even chocolate.
High fructose corn syrup is about as unnatural as a sugar can get.
It's chemically processed and one of the many reasons why we're so prone to obesity, diabetes and mood swings.
There are very few processed foods that don't contain the stuff.
Hydrogenated oil is also in just about everything that has been processed.
The stuff is bad news because it clogs arteries and causes diabetes.
The stuff is known as a trans fat and has been linked to causing more than 100,000 heart attacks each year.
Artificial sweeteners are supposed to be a healthier alternative to sugar.
However, artificial sweeteners are laced with chemicals that cause memory loss, mood swings, and even death.
Yet ironically our government approved this dangerous stuff.
Chocolate is a sinful treat that just about everyone enjoys.
But, chocolate contains both caffeine and sugar, which only adds to the risk of diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
And while the caffeine isn't much, it can still become highly addictive if it's consumed in large quantities.
So with all of those unhealthy ingredients it's easy to see why we have so many health problems despite our efforts to stay healthy.
Commercial products are just not the same anymore, no matter what shape or form they come in.
If you want to get back to the healthy side of granola, look for one that is organic or better yet, make your own.
After all, there's nothing better than homemade and believe me, your body will thank you for it.
