With nearly perfect weather year-round, Florida is a great place for motorcycle riders. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires registration of all motorcycles and maintains a database, as required by state statutes. - All motorcycles in Florida are required to display a 4-by-7 inch license plate. Riders must renew the plate annually. The plate has a different design for riders 21 or younger.
- If the manufacturer describes a vehicle as a "motor scooter," then it falls to the state's definition of a motorcycle to determine if the device needs a license plate. Florida defines motorcycle as "any vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, but excluding a tractor or a moped." Mopeds and disability access vehicles also require license plates.
- The state registers motorcycles, mopeds and motorized disability vehicles. However, only motorcycles get titles. Mopeds and disability vehicles do not, but the owners do need a bill of sale, manufacturer's certificate of origin or other such document to prove the rightful owner. Florida does not require proof of insurance on any of these vehicles.
