This is a statement dog trainers hear all the time from new dog owners.
The more you read, the more videos you watch or the more trainers you speak with the more you will feel confused.
Why does that happen.
That is an easy answer.
It is because there are as many ways to train a dog as there are people doing it.
Yes it's true.
Stop and think about raising a child everybody does it a bit different but it does not mean that any one of those parents is wrong, it simply means they are doing it their way.
So back to dog training.
Every trainer does it a bit different and most of them do a good job of helping you with your dog.
Simply put there is no right and no wrong way only the way that works for your particular dog.
Here are a few suggestions that may help you determine what you are looking for in the way of training.
Do you have a preference for what you would like in the training format? Do you want a group class? Even though it can be effective for some people group classes are actually the worst choice when it comes to training.
Most people feel that there is too much confusion, too many dogs and you are not getting 1 on 1 attention.
On the other hand private lessons in your home may be much more productive for you and your dog.
You are able to work on training without a bunch of distractions and your trainer can see any behavior issues that are happening at home.
If training is really not your cup of tea maybe a board and train program would be best for you.
You simply drop your dog off for 28 days, 4 weeks, and at the end you get back a trained dog.
It is simple for you and yet very effective.
Your program should come with at least 2 private lessons where the trainer teaches you what your dog already knows.
The last thing to consider is whether you want to use a trainer that is a treat trainer or a trainer that uses motivational methods without bribing the dogs with food.
Most people do not want to have to carry treats in their pockets for the rest of their lives.
If that is the way you feel then be sure to ask any trainer that you are considering if they use food and move onto another if the answer is yes.
Hopefully the information in this article has helped remove some of the confusion when it comes to dog training.
