A fever is the bodies way of fighting infection or trying to rid itself of toxic matter, the average humans temperature ranges between 37,9 to 37,5 degrees C [98,4 Degree F to 99,5 Degree F], so any variation to the top of the average temperature is called a fever [for a prolonged period].
Exercise, hot days and some types of foods will increase a persons temperature but this is for a short period only and the temperature will return to normal without any outside assistance.
The onset of this problem [could also be due to a unwashed foods or unhygienic living conditions] generally starts with a feeling of malaise, slight shivering and general aches and pains, the person will feel thirsty and pass less than the usual amount of urine.
As it gets worse the pulse rate will increase, the patient will breath a lot faster and sweat profusely, urine will be very concentrated and the shivering will get a lot worse [a febrile condition will occur where the patient cannot get warm no matter what and in the next minute be so hot that they don't know what to do with themselves].
After the profuse sweating the patient generally starts to improve, this means that the fever has 'broken' and the immune system has successfully combated whatever caused the problem in the first instance.
A high temperature is associated with most illnesses and is a secondary symptom of whatever disease is present.
Topical treatment Cold packs - wet a sheet in cold water, wring it out and put over the patient [if the temperature is very high point a fan onto the patient at this time as well], change the sheet as soon as it is no longer cold, this should help the temperature to drop.
Cold baths [with ice if necessary] - put the patient into a bath of cold water [not the most comfortable of things for the poor patient] - this is basically only done if the patient has one hell of a fever and you need to get it down as quickly as possible before any further complications occur.
If the patient is on the other end of the fever where they cannot get warm, hot-water bottles under the blankets, at the feet and against the sides of the body will assist it giving them the feeling that they are warming up.
Do not expect this to last to long as the fever will do a turn around and the patient will get hot and throw all the blankets and hot-water bottles onto the floor [sigh] Natural home remedies using fenugreek - assists in bringing down temperatures and helping with loosening/dissolving of any mucus, make a tea out of this plants seeds and administer 2x daily to the fevered patient basil - holy basil is very effective in reducing temperatures, boil about 10 grams of these leave in 500 ml water, allow to cool, drain and administer this liquid with half a glass of milk [equal portions of each] into which you have mixed a teaspoon of honey/sugar and a 1/4 teaspoon cardamon powder saffron - very effective in the case of temperatures, make a tea from 1/2 a teaspoon of saffron and around 30 ml water, give one teaspoon to the patient every hour till the fever is reduced raisins - beneficial for fevers, soak a handful of these in about 1/2 a cup of water, crush, strain, add 1/2 a teaspoon lime juice and give to the patient 2x daily apricot - very cooling during the high temperature period, a cup of the juice of this fruit will assist in quenching the thirst as well as supplying extra vitamins and minerals to the patient grapefruit - quenches thirst and assists in cooling the patient, half a glass of this juice with half a glass of water should be given to the patient at regular intervals orange - assists the immune system, provides energy and assists in increasing the urinary output, a glass of this tasty juice should be given to the patient as often as possible blood-wort or hog-weed - induces perspiration which in turn assists with relieving the fever, make a concoction of 15 grams in about 1/4 liter of water and give to the sufferer at least twice daily Diet The patient will really not want to eat but try to give him as much fluid as possible [orange juice, apricot juice etc], entice them to eat by offering them their favorite foods, try to ensure that the meals they do eat are well balanced and full of nutrients.
