How to Quiet a Noisy Maytag Washing Machine

    • 1). Identify the noise. Clicking between cycles, gurgling during draining, humming and splashing are all normal operational sounds. If you are washing clothes with zippers or large buttons, you may hear them clink against the side of the tub as it agitates or spins.

    • 2). Check the load. If the majority of the load is on one side of the tub, the imbalance can cause a loud thumping sound. Manually redistribute the load evenly, and restart the cycle. Washing very heavy or bulky items like rugs can also cause this sound, so try washing large items individually.

    • 3). Check the cycle. If you chose the Bulky cycle for a normal load, the washer is working much harder than it needs to and doesn't have enough weight in the tub to compensate. Switch to a cycle appropriate for the load and restart.

    • 4). Push down on each corner of the machine individually. If the washer tilts in the direction you are pushing, it means the feet are uneven. The back feet self-adjust, but the front feet must be manually screwed to the correct height. Place a level on top of the machine to guide you, and turn the feet clockwise to make them lower or counter-clockwise to make them higher.

    • 5). Move the washer completely out of its usual spot and check the floor for dips or buckles. Roll a marble or a golf ball over the area to help illustrate the direction of the tilt. If replacing the floor is impractical, place a 3/4-inch piece of plywood under the machine to provide support.

    • 6). Purchase a set of self-stick felt or silicone pads for your washer's feet. These pads work as shock absorbers and grippers, and will quiet the machine. Each pad is pre-glued, and simply needs to be stuck on the bottom of each foot.
