Steelers Superbowl The First Win 1974
Steelers Superbowl 1974
After 42 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers Superbowl drought was finally over. The man they called €the Chief€, or Steeler's owner Art Rooney, won his first Super Bowl when his Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IX on January 12th, 1975. The Steelers won the game 16-6!! Led by Hall of Famers, €Mean€ Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Lynn Swann, and Franco Harris, the Steelers dominated the Vikings on both sides of the ball, and the Steelers' Super Bowl dynasty in the 1970's was officially born.
The Steelers 1974 draft was arguably the greatest draft in NFL history. The draft consisted of Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Jack Lambert, Mike Webster, and free agent rookie Donnie Shell. Four Hall of Famers from that class alone, added to an already solid foundation with €Mean€ Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, and Mel Blount (just to name a few), the Steelers won the AFC Central Crown with a 10-3-1 mark. They defeated O.J. Simpson's Buffalo Bills in the AFC's 1st round divisional playoff game 32-14. Simpson only had 49 yards rushing in the game and the Steel Curtain showed the entire NFL that their defense was clearly most dominant.
First Steelers Superbowl
Their dominance didn't just stop there. The following week in the AFC Championship game against the Oakland Raiders in Oakland, the mighty Steel Curtain defense held the Raiders to only 21 yards rushing for the entire game, and Pittsburgh went on to victory 24-13 to earn their first trip to the Super Bowl.
In Super Bowl IX, versus the Vikings, the Steel Curtain recorded the first safety in Super Bowl history, pressured Vikings Quarterback Fran Tarkenton all day, battled 3 of his passes down, intercepted him 2 times, and caused 3 turnovers. They held the Vikings to a total of 185 yards of offense. While the defense played their part, the Steelers offense did theirs as well. Led by running back Franco Harris, who, by the way, was the game MVP, rushed for a then Super Bowl record of 34 rushes for 158 yards and 1 touchdown. Terry Bradshaw also added a touchdown pass to Tight End Larry Brown late in the 4th Quarter to seal the game for the Steelers 16-6. This was the first of 4 Super Bowl wins for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1970's era.
Thus beginning the Steelers Superbowl reign of the 70's!!
