Write Off Debt on Your Credit Card
Find out what interest rate you are paying on your credit cards and try to get them swapped to a zero interest card if you can.
Be careful of the expiry date on zero interest offers which often go up to 20% or more after the free interest period has elapsed.
You will usually have to pay a transfer fee of around 3% so make sure it is worth your while and work out how much this is compared to the money you will save.
If you do not have the transfer option to a zero percent card you should phone up your credit card company and threaten that you are going to leave.
They will almost always offer you a reduction in your interest rate if you do this in the right way.
I rang my credit company asking if they could lower the interest rate and they told me they could not help.
Half an hour later after ringing round for a lower interest rate on another card and saying I was leaving them I had lowered my interest from 16% to 8% for the duration of the balance.
I was asked what I would do once I had transferred the balance - would I be leaving or staying with the company? You can guess which answer gave me the better deal.
I said that one!! Try also to pay more than the minimum amount off each month.
The longer it takes you to pay off the card the more money in interest you will be paying.
