How to Build My Own Car Rack

    • 1). Attach the roof rails on top of the car along the right and left edges with a power drill and screws. Make sure the rails are perfectly parallel or the rack won't be straight.

    • 2). Slide two rail mounts onto each of the roof rails. Each mount should be one-third of the way away from the end of the rails. So if your rails are 3-feet long, place one mount at 1 foot and another at 2 feet.

    • 3). Insert bolts through the mounts once they are in the correct position. Tighten the bolts onto the mounts with nuts and wrench.

    • 4). Set one length of square tubing along the left rail and mounts. The tubing should be as long as the roof of the car. Place another piece of tubing along the right side.

    • 5). Weld the tubing to the mounts on the rails using a welding torch. Make sure you don't weld the mounts to the rails or you won't be able to remove them.

    • 6). Finish the tubing into a closed rectangle shape using another piece of tubing along the front and back of the rails. Weld the short pieces onto the longer tubing to create the base of the rack.

    • 7). Attach a vertical piece of tubing to each corner of the rack base. These pieces of tubing should be as tall as you want the rack to be deep.

    • 8). Connect the top of the corner pieces with additional tubing to finish the rack frame. Add more tubing along the sides and bottom of the rack to flesh out the rack to your needs.
