Medication for ADHD & Depression
- According to the Mayo Clinic, antidepressants may be given when stimulants are ineffective or when depression is evident. Antidepressants alleviate symptoms of ADHD and depression by increased brain chemicals associated with mood and attention.
- Wellbutrin is the most commonly prescribed medication for comorbid ADHD and depression. Tricyclic antidepressants may also be used.
- Antidepressants such as Wellbutrin may have beneficial effects, such a mood improvement and improved ability to concentrate.
- Side effects of Wellbutrin may include headaches, insomnia, loss of appetite, skin rashes, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, vomiting, weight gain and loss of sexual interest.
- Medications alone may be not be effective. Therapy may be needed as well. People react differently to medications so all medications are generally taken on a trial period.
