A dog pedicure, also known as a pawdicure, can be a relaxing experience for your dog. Giving your dog a pedicure is a way to pamper your dog while spending some quality time with your pooch. However, before you begin the process, it's important to have all the pedicure tools you will need. - Pet Place recommends laying your dog on a comfortable blanket during the pedicure.
- Before you start the pedicure, Pet Place recommends using a warm, wet wash cloth to clean your dog's paws to remove dirt.
- A brush or comb eliminatea hair that may get tangled or matted. It will also remove any excess debris.
- According to Washington State University website, nails should be cut just before the quick. The quick contains the blood vessels and nerves that are located at the tip of the dog's paw near the toe nail. If you accidentally cut the quick, you can apply styptic powder, flour or baking powder to the end of the nail to stop the bleeding. After the nail trim, you should reward your dog with a treat. Pet Place notes, "The remainder of his pedicure can also be a reward. It may even cause him to look forward to his next nail trim." In addition, a "nail grinder" or rotary tool will also work to trim your dog's nails.
- According to Pet Place, blunt-ended scissors are useful to cut away long hair growing out from between your dog's toes and paw pads.
- Canine cream or moisturizer will protect your dog's paws. "Dog's paws take a daily beating, and tough, dry tissue develops. Cracks can develop in the paw pads, which can lead to a build-up of debris, causing discomfort," states Pet Place. Skin lotions used for humans are not recommended for use on dogs as it can soften the tissue.
- You can paint your dog's nails with a polish specifically designed for dogs. Pet Place advises, "Only use a nail polish designed specifically for pets, as a polish designed for humans may not be safe." You can find this polish at pet stores or from a groomer.
