    Green Eggs and Ham

    • Almost every child is familiar with Dr. Seuss' famous storybook "Green Eggs and Ham." Dr. Seuss fans will recognize the significance of green cupcakes. Cupcakes can be made with a batter that has been dyed green and then frosted green. To specifically allude to the book, bake green cupcakes and frost them white. Place a large green candy in the center for a yolk.

    Cat in the Hat

    • For a simple tribute to the famous tale of "The Cat in the Hat," frost a cupcake white. Place a large red candy or white-frosted cookie on the cupcake. Top with a white candy or cookie. Add another red layer. Continue layering until there are at least three layers of each color. The cupcake should now resemble the famous cat hat.

More ambitious cupcake creators can create a cat-like cupcake. Frost the cupcake white. Use two M&Ms or other bright-colored candies for eyes. Use a brown candy or chocolate chip for a nose. Thin strands of black licorice can be used for whiskers. A hat can be made out of a marshmallow with red icing stripes or red licorice bands.

    The Sneetches

    • The story of The Sneetches encompasses the problems between star-bellied and plain-bellied Sneetches; this tale can be commemorated easily with single yellow cupcakes topped with yellow frosting and a large blue star. The star can be made from simple blue frosting for out of blue candies, such as M&Ms, Skittles, or similar treats.

Crafty cupcake bakers may opt to create a full Sneetch by assembling cupcakes in the shape of one of the creatures. The cupcakes can then be frosted yellow and topped with a prominent blue star on the belly.

    One Fish, Two Fish

    • This simple learning-to-read book can inspire easily-recognizable cupcakes. Use blue food coloring to dye the batter blue before baking, and then top with a contrasting shade of blue frosting. Then, decorate each cupcake with two gummy fish candies, such as Swedish Fish. If candies are not available, carefully frost two fish shapes on top of the cupcakes. For added variety, alternately cycle through decorating each cake with one fish, two fish, a red fish and a blue fish. Write the corresponding description in small, fine frosting below the fish.

With more time and skill, cupcakes can actually be shaped like fish. This can be done using a special cupcake mold or by carefully cutting the cupcakes after baking. Alternately frost the fish-shaped cupcakes red and blue. Serve on a blue platter or similar background.
