In 1991, when Nintendo's Mario was ruling the video game world, Sega launched its new game genre in the form of Sonic the Hedgehog.
The game was very successful with over 50 million copies sold.
Sonic gave a tough challenge to Nintendo's Mario Bros in the walk of video game.
Sonic is known for his supersonic speed.
He is also featured with some unique elements such as jaw-dropping loops, super spin dash and impressive boss battles.
When Sega's research and development department was working on creating Sonic, various other characters were under consideration until Sonic was finally chosen.
A special task force was created specifically to work on the project and the team was named the Sonic Team.
Masato Nakamura gave the amazing sound track to the character.
Sonic was prominently shown in blue so as to match the blue in Sega's logo.
Sonic's appearance often changed as per the medium and theme of the episodes.
Sonic was originally depicted with a size of 1:2 head to height ratio but designer Yuji Uekawa gave a new look to Sonic for a new Sonic Adventure.
He appeared as a tall and thin character with long legs and a less globe like body.
Sonic was becoming so popular that Sega release a new animated series called The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic fought against the evil Dr.
Robotonik and his army of robots.
In the show he appeared as a hero battling against evil rule of Dr.
Robotonik to free his world.
Sonic has always been a mascot of Sega and is still one of the most legendary video game characters of all time.
Sonic has also been used as a logo in various sponsorships by Sega.
Sonic is an older character but has proven he will live on for some time and continue making great games.
