• Many rental properties require an application for tenancy before you move in. When you complete the application, the landlord may require a holding deposit to hold the rental unit until your move-in date. You typically pay this amount before signing a lease. A written lease represents a binding contract between you and the landlord. The lease includes the agreed upon security amount and a length of tenancy. By signing the lease, you agree to pay the security deposit and move into the property for the length of time specified on the lease.
