How to Remove Hair from a Bathtub Drain
- 1). Allow the water to clear from the tub. To speed up the process, use a pitcher or bowl to scoop the standing water from the bathtub.
- 2). Remove the drain cover. Some drain covers simply pop off with a screwdriver, while others may require that you loosen a couple of screws.
- 3). Stick your finger into the drain hole and scoop out as much hair as possible. Have a garbage bag nearby to dispose of the hair.
- 4). Unbend a wire coat hanger and stick the curved end into the drain hole. Move the hanger around in the drain hole to remove more hair.
- 5). Pour three-quarters-cup baking soda down the drain, followed by a half-cup white vinegar. Cover the drain immediately with a drain plug or a rag stuffed into the drain hole. The baking soda and vinegar will produce an eruption-like reaction, so it is important to keep the drain hole covered so the contents do not escape.
- 6). Remove the drain plug after 30 minutes and slowly pour 1 gallon of boiling hot water down the drain. Use caution when pouring the hot water so that it does not splash onto your skin.
