How to Adjust a Garage Door Opener's Down Limit
- 1). Set a stepladder under the garage door opener power head. The power head is the main body of the garage door opener. Grab the remote control for the garage door opener. You will open and close the door with the remote while adjusting the down limit.
- 2). Locate the up and down limit screws on your garage door opener power head. Most openers have the limit screws on either the left side of the power head or the rear of the power head. The screws are embedded white screws with a slot for a flat-head screwdriver. Some newer models of openers have limit "learn" buttons instead of screws.
- 3). Turn the down limit screw counterclockwise with a flat-head screwdriver, if the door is not closing all the way to the floor. One full turn corresponds to 2 inches of door travel. Turn the screw in small increments, and press the remote control button to open and close the garage door with the opener. Continue adjusting the screw until the door closes fully to the floor.
- 4). Press and hold the "close limit" button, if you have the "learn" system instead of manual limit screws. Release the button after the door closes fully. Press and release the "down set limit" button next to the close limit button. A small LED light will flash to indicate the opener has stored the limit setting.
- 5). Turn the limit screw clockwise if the door is closing to far and causing the reverse sensor to engage. For "learn" type models, use the directional pad to adjust in small increments. Press and release the directional arrow quickly to adjust the setting.
