The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, also known as London 2012, took place in London, United Kingdom from July 27 to August 12 2012. The event featured cross country mountain biking at Hadleigh Farm, east of the city of London. This summer, London became the first city to host the Olympic Games for the third time. The 2012 Olympic Games featured 26 sports and 39 disciplines, including mountain biking, a sport that made its debut in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mountain bikers raced on a brand-new mountain bike course at Hadleigh Farm, a 550 acre venue that was chosen for its hilly terrain and technical challenges. The cross country mountain biking events took place on Saturday, August 11th and Sunday the 12th. Eighty athletes competed in the mountain bike event, 50 men and 30 women.

Over the weeks, About.com talked with David Herman, Olympic BMX racer, about his BMX beginnings, training routine and more. He shared that he deals with the physical and emotional stress of racing by, "keeping fit, eating the right foods, not overdoing, but “doing” every day. Taking things race by race. Being humble protects me from disappointment. Being consistent keeps me on track!" Maris Strombergs, two-time Olympic gold medallist, also graced us with an interview, revealing the Olympian's first bike, winning motto and more. He shared these words of wisdom with mountain bikers just getting started, "Have fun and enjoy it."
