Here are some of the oldest restaurants in the state, which means you get to sample lip-smacking meals and learn fascinating history at the same time:
No Name Pub
The No Name Pub in Big Pine Key is well-known for its Dade County pine bar which is 80 years old. This joint which calls itself A Nice Place If You Can Find It, is a few minutes off U.S. 1 in Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys, about 30 miles north of Key West. It is a little difficult to find but once you do, it is worth the effort. The pub began as a general store and bait shop in 1931, with the eatery added in 1936. The outside is decorated like an old wooden cottage whereas the insides have every surface is covered with thousands of fluttering dollar bills. It is also filled with peoples names and initials, messages, doodles. Legend has it that there was so much money in the 70s and 80s; they began to hang it on the walls. The food is amazing, especially the sandwiches and pizzas.
Howley's
Howley's, an authentic 1950s diner in West Palm Beach, which transports you to the 50s, was founded in April, 1950 by Patrick J. Howley. It was purchased and restored in 2004 to its original look and feel by Rodney Mayo and partners. The place has an uber-cool ambience with hipster elements at play and the wall covered in paintings by local artists. There are Formica tables with a vintage boomerang pattern, a fountain with the original swivel stools and such decorative details as the hula-dancer lamp and star light bulbs that were featured in Howleys original 1950 poster. The selection of beer is great. As for the food check out the Country Fried Steak, Fried Chicken, Mac and Cheese, and Crab cakes.
Cap's Place
To reach Caps Place you have to go through a Lighthouse Point neighborhood in your car, park at the dock and then take the five-minute boat ride over to the restaurant. The walls of the rustic bar are lined with photos that capture Caps history. It opened its door in 1928 and a bootlegger was behind it. Over the years, guests like Winston Churchill, Joe DiMaggio, and George Harrison have visited this place. Dont forget to read up about the amazing history of this place about hurricanes, lighthouse keepers, rum running, mobsters and illegal turtle-egg pancakes before you come.
